I've been very interested in the climate problem and sustainable solutions, and over these last couple of months, I came to the stark realization that our town is changing. From the 90 degree springs to the failing blossoms, it did not seem obvious at first, but now it is impossible to ignore. I began by asking myself many questions, such as, “How did we get here?” and “Why is this happening?” and the answer to those questions is climate change. I know that our climate is directly impacted by our carbon footprint. Often times, when thinking about reducing carbon footprints, people think about electric vehicles or solar panels, but in reality, those solutions are expensive and not for everyone. Then, I asked myself, “How can I help? How can we all help?”
A big part of the climate situation is how we dispose of trash and recyclables. Do we know where our trash and recycling go? I wanted to gain more insight into it. Many people wonder, "Does it really matter what bin it goes in?" After all, one piece of trash may not seem like much, but I strongly believe that every piece makes a difference, especially down the line. Therefore, I spent my summer taking a journey to follow the trash.
I then partnered up with my sister Sunidhi, to power our efforts to help spread awareness, conduct campaigns and reach out to the community .
Our journey wouldn’t have been possible without the continued support of the hardworking, passionate administrators at the Town of Boxborough, and the DPW. The Sustainability Committee of Boxborough has been a motivating and supportive partner to our community outreach efforts.
Our effort right now is to spread the insights of our journey and spread the message about what small things we can change on a day to day basis in our homes, because we believe that fighting climate change is something we have to do step by step, together.
