Let's look at the final destination of household plastics

Let's look at the final destination of all the plastic that we use in our daily life. Where do you think it ends up? How do you think it impacts our environment?

By not sorting our trash properly there are two different places where they can end up...

The Landfill

Many people don’t see the issue with trash accumulating in a landfill, but the truth is, these seemingly abundant storage spaces are not limitless. To avoid the landfills from running out of space we incinerate large amounts of trash at a time. While this does seem effective it is actually harming us more than it is helping us. By burning our trash we release large amounts of CO2 at a time quickly increasing our atmosphere’s temperature.

The Ocean

The second location you can trace your trash to is the ocean. Here plastics and other garbage negatively impact marine life.

What percent gets reused?

By properly sorting your trash you can ensure that  part of your trash doesn't end up in either of these two places, however  did you know that when you recycle your trash properly only 10% of our recyclables actually get reused? The remaining 90% is also shipped to landfills to either be incinerated or dumped in an ocean.

In reality, by stopping the production and usage of plastic is the most ideal way to combat climate change, taking the time and effort to properly sort your trash is one small way you can implement change in your community
